Primary care prescribing for nutritional products

The majority of spend and scripts within the nutrition sector in UK primary care are for liquid oral nutritional supplements (ONS), prescribed to treat malnutrition. Tube feeds for adults and children are another high cost category in this sector.

This sector contains infant nutrition, including amino acid based formula (AAF), extensively hydrolysed formulas (EHF), lactose free or low lactose formulas, as well as anti-reflux formulas and nutrition for pre-term babies.

Also covered are specialist diet products to assist the dietary management of conditions such as Phenylketonuria (PKU), Homocystinuria (HCU) and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), and ketogenic diet foods.

The RxIndex below monitors the performance of the top adult liquid ONS brands.
