The number of prescription items for treatments relating to the gastro-intestinal system has been increasing each year, from 60 million prescription items in 2007 to 99 million in 2017. Net ingredient cost has varied over this period however spend is now 4% lower than in 2007. Antisecretory drugs and mucosal protectants constitute almost two thirds of the prescription items in this section.
