Diabetes drugs

Primary care prescribing data on drugs used in the treatment of diabetes

Drugs used in diabetes represent almost 11% of the total expenditure on community prescriptions in England, having risen from 6.9% in 2006. The proportion of prescription items accounted for by drugs used in diabetes has also risen, from 3.8% in 2006 to 4.8% in 2017.

With PHE estimating there to be 5 million people with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and Diabetes UK estimating there are almost 1 million people with type 2 diabetes who have not yet been diagnosed, we would expect prescribing figures for drugs used in diabetes to continue to increase.
